I hope you have ate sandwiches at least once in you life.
As in a sandwich there is
1)a bread at the bottom, then
2)some stuffings, then
3)tomato
4)And another slice of bread at last..
Similar is the concept of layers in Photoshop...
Basically instead of editing the original image we treat it as background, then create various layers on it and edit the layers, so that if any mistake occurs we may remove the layer and there is no damage to the main image....
Thus there is a heap of layers over the background layer and the priority of layer in from top to bottom.
i.e. the layer which is above(say layer 1) is visible completely and the part of layer which is below layer 1 (say layer 2)which in not hidden by the contents of first layer are only visible.
